It has certainly taken a turn to the freezing this past week…BRRRRRRRRRR… This drastic change has done a number on my body. My muscles have begun to tense up causing my breath to become shorter and constriction in the lungs. When this happens, what’s a yoga girl to do? Yep, continue to work on breathing techniques that can help expand the lungs and relax the body. So with that in mind, allow me to introduce Dirgha Pranayama or Three Part Breath, the three parts including the abdomen, ribcage, and chest. As many of you know, I have begun including this technique at the beginning of the morning classes. By gathering the breath in the belly and gathering more air in to travel up through the ribcage to the upper chest cavity, then slowly releasing the air completely in the reverse flow, it helps to promote full and complete breathing, increasing oxygen supply to the blood and keeps the lungs healthy. With the deep breathing, the muscles in the body become relaxed, releasing tension, calming the mind and body that can reduce stress and anxiety, preparing the body for a deeper meditation. Whew… with all these benefits, it is no wonder I have chosen this technique to do battle with the cold?
