I apologize for the later than usual scheduled email. It’s seems that despite all best intentions, life had something else store for me for the day. So as I finally sit to write this post after dealing with some stressful chaos in the home, I take a moment to find my bearings. I had originally planned to write about another yoga posture but as I try to move pass the stressful day, my thoughts continue to think more about the breath & it’s effects on the body to help release tension. As many of you many know, breath plays a key element throughout yoga, as attention to one’s breath can give an indication of one’s current state of mind. I myself have been practicing many breathing techniques over the years. One in particular that I have recently incorporated more often in my own personal practice is the Ujjayi Breath. Also referred to as the “Ocean’s Breath”, it is a Breathing technique that is done by gently constricting the throat & pulling the breath in & out through the nose creating a sound similar to ocean. The inhalation & exhalation is even throughout and the sound of the breath, similar to waves, is very soothing to the nervous system. The Ujjayi Breath can also help relieve headaches, sinus pressure, and strengthen the nervous & digestive system. Finally, the friction of the air passing through the lungs & throat generates inner heat allowing the body to feel calm & energized, something that can be beneficial as we continue to deal with this bone chilling cold. So join me this week as we warm the body & mind with a breath that can help relax and invigorate us for the week ahead.
