How’s the summer been treating you so far? It seems that we have continued to be caught between this spectrum of hot & humid to damp & raining. From the weather forecast I have seen, it does not look like it’s going to end anytime soon. I don’t know about you but I’ve noticed my jointed have continued to be tense and my body lethargic, creating stiffness along my entire back. When this happens, the only thing I can do is work on poses that put a spring back to my spine while calming the mind. One pose in particular that comes to mind is Ardha Matsyendrasana or Seated Spinal Twist. Not only is this a great cooling yoga pose, it also helps to increase flexibility & range of motion of the spine. Ardha Matsyendrasana opens the chest & shoulders, stretches the hips & hip flexors, & strengthens the oblique muscles of the abdomen. Seated Spinal Twist is gentle twist that also helps to relieve menstrual discomfort, fatigue, sciatica & backache while massaging the abdominal organs that can stimulate digestion & detoxify the liver. Finally, as every nerve of the body is rooted in the spine, the rotation of its axis helps to stimulate the nerves, releasing tension, helping to clam the nervous system. So join me as we twist our way through the week to bring coolness to the body & calm the mind.
