Hi Everyone,

Brrrr… this past week has certainly greeted us with its icy, wintry fingers. I don’t know about you, but this arctic blast has made it difficult to get out of my cozy warm bed in the morning. When this happens, I can’t help think of ways to warm up the body especially during my yoga practice. One way in particular, is by generating heat from within. Some of you may have noticed that I have been implementing a lot of belly backbends in class. The center of the belly is where the furnace of the body is located that helps to create heat. In yoga, the belly center is connected to the Third Chakra, or Manipura Chakra that is also connected to the element of fire. So poses like Urdhva Mukha Svanasana/Upward Facing Dog Pose, Bhujangasana /Cobra Pose & Salamba Bhujangasana/Sphinx Pose can really help to increase our body temperature by engaging our abdominals while on the belly. But it doesn’t stop there. These poses also work to stretch the chest, lungs, shoulders & abdomen. They also help to improve posture while strengthening the spine & firming the buttocks. Finally they also help to calm the mind & reduce stress. So join me this week as we continue to find the warmth within.
