Hi Everyone,
Has spring finally sprung???? Out with the cold & in with the warmth!!!!! (I hope…) I have always felt that this season is certainly a time of awakening & remembrance. I was away the last few days, celebrating the Qingming or Tombsweeping festival with my family. For those who may not be familiar, it’s a day celebrated in China & other countries in Asia, where those would visit the graves of their ancestors & loved ones who have passed & pay tribute to them in the afterlife.
During this time, my family would gather together & visit my mother’s tomb. As always, we would bring wine & some of her favorite foods for her to taste. (Yes, in my family, we believe this is a time that she is able to visit us from the afterlife.) We then bow down to her 3 times, and offer her our prayers (I tend to ask how she’s been doing), and burn incense & joss paper that represents money, gold, & silver. (Because, she needs to be well taken cared of in the afterlife.) We would joke about pacing herself with her yearly allowance & I would caution her about her love of mahjong. Of course, my siblings would remind me that she might be doing all the winning. LOL. It is a time, though may be very sad at first, becomes a time of laughter & remembrance as we are reminded of the joy our mother had given to our lives. It is also a time to remind myself that life can be short & unexpected & to cherish each moment as you strive to live the life that you love.
For me, though it took some time to realize, teaching yoga became the life that I love. So as spring takes it root with its warm weather and the trees & flowers begin to bloom, I’d like to take a moment to remember those we may have lost & honor the memories they have left with us as we are reminded to live the life we love.
