Hi Everyone,

How has May been treating you so far? The weather has been lovely lately, leaving me with the desire to stay outdoors and bask in the sunlight & warmth. But sadly, that is not the case, as this year’s allergy season has been especially brutal. Some of you may have noticed that I have been putting a great deal of emphasis on opening up the whole body, especially the chest, in class the last few weeks. As I have mentioned, by working to stretch the front, back, and sides of the torso, we work on combating the effects of allergies that can make it difficult to breathe & cause our chest to collapse when the sides of the body become tense. Heart openers are a great way to do that, but did you also know, inversions can also help? One such inversion is Salamba Sarvangasana or Supported Shoulder Stand. This is a great pose to help to open the nasal passages & improve drainage by opening the muscles at the base of the skull & back of the neck where pressure can accumulate, allowing the muscles to loosen. Supported Shoulder Stand is a great pose to strengthen the upper body, especially the neck, shoulders, and upper back & improve blood circulation & stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system that can calm the nerves, decrease depression & anxiety. This pose can also help ease fatigue, improve the immune system & digestion while increasing self-confidence. So join me this week as we continue to open the body while releasing tension in the back of the neck as we play with Supported Shoulder Stand but perhaps with some modifications.
